The Maelstrom (Moskstraumen) has been described by Edgar Alan Poe, Jules Verne and a number of other writers and historians. There are large seabird colonies on the skerries between the islands of Moskenesøy and Mosken.

This ancient map gives us some idea of how dangerous people considered the Maelstrom to be.
