The first of its kind in Norway, the museum opened its doors in 1992. Since then, the Doll's Museum in the Lofoten Islands has become a concept in its own right, founded as it was on the true joy of collecting, and on personal initiative.
Many of the adults that visit the museum experience a flood of old memories ... the toys and dolls from way back when conjure up fond memories of childhood friends and bygone circumstances in the mind's eye .. as though it was only yesterday. And the children, too, find it amusing to see the "old-fashioned" toys that their parents and grandparents once played with.
The Museum houses a couple of thousand exhibits collected from all over Norway, and includes a special "Lofoten Room" with toys collected within the local region.
The Museum is open ten hours a day throughout the summer. Off-season opening times include Saturdays and Sundays in May and September. Otherwise, the museum is closed altogether. However, it is possible to make arrangements for "after hour visits" by telephone all year round.
This "porcelain girl" is called Madeleine and is 90 years old. She was made at the well-known Kestner factory in Germany. It says "Made in Germany" at the back of her neck, but the little Oslo girl who owned her could not pronounce more than " Made...", so she made the rest up, hence the name Madeleine.
