Danish seines: fishing gear, a kind of small trawl
fish racks wooden racks on which the cod are hung out to dry during the winter
handline single fishing line with hook and sinker
Hålogaland the old Norwegian name for North Norway
jekt broad sailing vessel used for freight purposes along the coast of Norway
klipfish cod or saithe, split, salted and dried
landlord/publican (Here:) local merchant with a monopoly on the sale of liquor, c. 1770 – 1870
longlines long fishing line, set horizontally, to which shorter, baited lines are attached at regular intervals
Nordland-type boats different types of old, wooden sailing/rowing vessels used for fishing
rorbu shack/wooden lodgings where the fishermen stayed and worked, especially during the major seasonal fisheries. Often on stilts along the shore
squire Wealthy merchant and landowner, often called "King of the Headland", with a monopoly on all trade and the right to determine all prices, etc. in his fishing village. (c. 1830 – 1940)
stockfish fish, usually cod or saithe, that has been dried in the open air on fish racks.
