Kjerkfjorden

The tiny hamlet of Kjerkfjorden nestles beneath the mountains at the head of the Kjerkfjorden. From here there is a path to the deserted settlement of Horseid on the outer coast of the island. Well worth a visit, despite a rather demanding hike. Local boat service on the Reinefjorden to/from Reine.
The framework in the foreground is fish racks. During the winter fishing season, the cod are hung out to dry on the racks. The result is stockfish, which is largely exported to Italy, where it is considered a delicacy. This type of fish processing has been going on for over a thousand years and fish racks can be seen all over Lofoten.
